ASA National Age Group Open Water Championship 2008
George Viner represented Wiltshire in the 17-24 age group Boys 2000 meters as part of the first team ever to represent the County at the ASA National Age Group Open Water Championships, held this year at Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham on Saturday 9th August 2008.
The weather conditions were atrocious, and visibility so poor that at the mid-point of the straight course neither the start nor finishing lines could be seen. Fortunately for the swimmers, at the end of the 2k trudge to the start the water was a balmy17 degrees, though rather choppy, with a head wind and added hazards of geese and swans to share the water with.
After a congested start, George produced a confident and measured performance in his first open water swim over this distance, finishing 10th in a strong field of experienced open water swimmers with a time of 30:22:08. Overall, Wiltshire finished joint 6th with Kent behind the winners Lancashire out of 12 teams that competed. He was congratulated on the day by County President Margaret Smith.

Chippenham Excel in Open Water
Wiltshire ASC held its Open Water Event on 16th July at Cotswold Water Park. Swan over 1500m, the competitors had to swim twice around a 750m circuit in Lake water of ~19°C. Chippenham were represented by a small, but hardy band of swimmers all achieving excellent results.
Good swimming for the Open Water and Youth Nationals!
All at the Club wish George Viner a good swim when he represents Wiltshire at the Open Water Nationals in Nottingham in early August. George gained selection by coming second in the recent Wiltshire Open Water event at the Cotswold Water Park near South Cerney. This is the first time Wiltshire has sent a team to the national competition.
Next week Jack Crow (100 & 200 Back), Maddie and Oliver Harris (both 50 and 100 Free) compete at Pond's Forge, Sheffield at the Youth Nationals. This is the first time Chippenham has managed three entrants in one year to this competition, an indication that the Club is reaching ever higher standards. Nigel Butler, the Coach, will guide the swimmers through their challenges, in all six races over five days.
All at the Club wish you well!

A squad of four came away with a clutch of Age Group and Club records, six Final places gained and nine National Qualifying Time swims. Kalynn Branston, Shane Chard and Maddie and Oliver Harris all swam impressively. Jack Crow however, went a significant step further and came away with his first two NQTs and check out the records he broke below!
This was the most successful South West Youth Championships within memory for Chippenham ASC. On the last day five NQTs were swum with four Final places achieved. For a Club the size of Chippenham this achievement should not be underestimated.
Club Records broken: Jack 50 Back AGR and Club, 100 Back AGR and Club in the Heat and Final, 200 Back AGR and Club in the Heat and Final, 200 Fly AGR and Club Maddie 50 Free AGR in Heat and Final
Finals reached: Kalynn Branston 200 Fly Jack Crow 100 Back, 200 Back Maddie 50 Free Oliver 50 Fly, 50 Free.
South West position by year group: Kalynn 200 Fly 5th, 200 IM 19th, 400 IM 9th Shane 100 Back 18th Jack 50 Back 5th, 100 Back 4th (Overall 7th in the South West 16/17 year olds), 200 Back 1st (Overall 5th in the South West 15/16 year olds), 50 Fly 10th, 100 Fly 11th, 200 Fly 9th, 200IM 15th Maddie 50 Free 2nd (Overall 4th in the South West 14/15 year olds) Oliver 50 Free 2nd (Overall 4th in the South West 17 year olds and over), 100 Free 3rd, 50 Fly 2nd (Overall 5th in the South West 17 year olds and over)
Today Jack swam an excellent 1.03.85 in the 15/16 year 100m back final of the South West Championships, held in Millfield School, to gain his first National time. This rewards a focused and determined attitude both in training and competition and opens a new chapter on his swimming development.
Close to a National time in 2007 he has edged ever closer this year. In the morning's heat Jack came within half a second of the National time but knew he had another chance on learning he had made the final to be held in the evening session. Quietly determined he stormed to a faster first 50m's than he had achieved in the morning and drove in right to the finish - a lesson for all swimmers. There were a few short, hectic moments as Nigel checked the scoreboard time and the National qualification chart ... and checked it again ... and then the small Chippenham band cheered and waved vigorously to signal Jack's achievement. He had confirmed it himself already by then!!!
The hard works will now start very soon for Jack. It is common for swimmers from other clubs to underperform when they compete at the Nationals. This is either because they are overawed or simply believe getting there is the end of the achievement. Chippenham swimmers do not underperform at the Nationals. This is down in large part to Nigel's physical and mental preparation of the competitors as well as the motivation of the individuals.
Jack is within striking distance of a couple of other National times ... so let's have some more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done Jack, you have the congratulations of everyone at the Club.

This year the Wiltshire Cotswold Water Park 1500m race will be held on the 16th June (with a "warm-up" race possibly being held on an earlier day) with the SW Open Water Championships being held again at Preston Beach, Weymouth on the 5th and 6th of June. It is being confirmed which of these events will constitute the Wiltshire Open Water Championships - for the last 2 years the Weymouth event has been used.
Summary details of the SW Championships are noted below, further details regarding the Cotswold Water Park event have yet to be issued.
Last year Chippenham ASC dominated the County scene, winning the Senior and Junior boys events for the second successive year and also winning the Junior girls championship. These successes were supported by numerous silver and bronze medals.
Please let me know if you are interested in any of the races by the end of April - by email, note via Ollie/Maddie or tell me.
Thanks, James.

The 14-strong County BAGCAT squad plundered 18 medals and 9 Club Age Group Records. The result of hard work in the training sessions and harder work in the competition.
The squad: Daniel Branston, John Branston, Kalynn Branston, Chelsea Chard, George Claverly, Emily Daulby, Evangeline Preece, Robert Preece, Katie Smith, Harriet Stanton, Miles Stanton, Olivia Stanton, Chris Waterfield, Owen Wilson.
Miles once again kept all his competitors behind him to finish as the overall 11 year old boy BAGCAT winner. This is the third year in a row he has dominated his County Age Group. Winning 9 gold medals and one silver he impressed by winning many of his races by a fair margin. John provided an outstanding BAGCAT performance coming 4th in the same age group. The best performing girl in medal terms was Katie who won the 50m and 200m breast, coming 2nd in the 100m in the same stroke.
The medal roll: Miles 9G, 1S; Katie 2G, 1S; John 2S, Kalynn 1S, 1B; Owen 1B
Kalynn broke the overall Club Record for 200fly, a distance she is making her own within the Club. With Miles and Olivia gained even more AGRs, 4 and 3 respectively, with Owen also making his mark on the Club Records.
Kalynn 200 fly Club and AGR. AGRs set: Miles 200 back and free, 400 free and im; Olivia 200 free, fly and back; Owen 50 breast.
Well done to all who swam, there is more to come from all of you!
County Youth Championships - Squad, Medals and Records
A squad of 12 swimmers gained a total of 11 gold, 13 silver and 5 age group medals along with 19 Junior and 11 Senior Championship medals.
13 Club Age Group Records were broken as were 10 Club Records.
A breakdown of medals and records can be found on the Results pages of the website under County.
All swimmers swam well with notable performances including Kalynn setting a 200 fly Club Record, Miles beating Jarryd Goode's "unbeatable" 200 fly AGR, Jack setting 6 Club Records including AGR's at 50, 100 and 200 back. Also, Ollie finished 3rd in the Skins against a challenging field.
The squad: Kalynn Branston, Shane Chard, Jack Crow, Ollie Harris, Sophie Malpas, Beatrice Moore, Rachel Moore, Evangeline Preece, Katie Smith, Miles Stanton, Chris Waterfield and Lewis Wilson.
20 Chippenham swimmers competed last Sunday in a hectic schedule of sprints over 36.67 yards at the Milton Road pool in Swindon. An unusual distance for most competitors, shorter than a 50m dash and a true test of starting and sprinting. Almost all swims produced personal bests.
Roll of swimmers: John Branston, Kalynn Branston, Chelsea Chard, Shane Chard, George Claverly, Jack Crow, Emily Daulby, Oliver Harris, Peter Holden, Emma Holloway, Ellie Khoury, Torin Landon, Sophie Malpas, Rachel Moore, Evangeline Preece, David Smith, Katie Smith, Miles Stanton, Olivia Stanton and Chris Waterfield.
11 swimmers achieved at least 1 age group medal with 2 also achieving Junior Championship or overall Championship medals a major achievement.
Roll of medallists: Jack Crow 2G, 1S and 2 Junior Gs; Oliver Harris - 2G, 2S and an overall Championship S and 2x4th places (medals are awarded for 4th and 5th places); Miles Stanton - 1G, 1S, John Branston 1S, 1B; Katie Smith 1S; Rachel Moore 2B; the following gained 1B Kalynn Branston, Emily Daulby, Emma Holloway, Evangeline Preece and Chris Waterfield.
15 records were broken, including 2 Wiltshire age group records (until last Sunday only 4 Chippenham swimmers had set County records in the last 10 years Jarryd Goode, Branwen Harris, Maddie Harris and Laura Young).
Club Age Group Record CAGR, Club Record CR, Wiltshire Age Group Record WAGR
Roll of record breakers: Jack Crow CAGR Back; Emily Daulby CAGR Fly; Oliver Harris CAGR & CR Back (both broken in heat and Championship final), CAGR & CR Fly (both broken in heat and Championship final), CAGR Breast, WAGR Free (heat) and WAGR, CAGR & CR (Championship final).
An excellent primer for the Wiltshire BAGCATS and Youth Championships.
At last night's Winter League 2 Gala George was the only Chippenham swimmer to set an Age Group Record. George swam 18.6 seconds in the 25m backstroke in the Boys 13 year old category. Being only 10 years of age at the moment he broke Nathaniel Auckland's 1999 10 year old Age Group Record.
Well done George, many more records out there to be broken!
Tigershark Meet medals and recent Age Group Records
A small Chippenham team of six came away with 13 medals from the recent Tigershark Meet. The team; Kalynn Branston, Shane Chard, Jack Crow, Emma Holloway, Evangeline Preece and Miles Stanton. The medals; Miles 4G 3S, Emma 2G 1S (to add to her excellent achievement of making the national synchro squad!) and Jack 1S 2B. An impressive return from comparatively few swims.
At the Tigershark Meet Jack broke the Chippenham 100 back Age Group Record (AGR).
At the Corsham Meet the same weekend the following set AGR's: Olivia Stanton in the 200 free and fly, Maddie Harris in the 100 fly and Rachel Moore in the 200 breast.
A grand haul of 47 medals was brought back by the Chippenham team from the Corsham Open last weekend. Three swimmers achieved best overall swimmer in their age group - Olivia Stanton, Katie Smith and Maddie Harris.
The roll of honour: Maddie Harris 6G, Olivia Stanton 5G 3S, John Branston 4G 1S, Faye Lardner 2G 1S 1B, Katie Smith 2G 1S 1B, Emily Daulby 1G 1B, Rachel Moore 5S 2B, Daniel Branston 1S 2B, Peter Holden 1S 1B, Beatrice Moore 1B, Chelsea Chard 1B, Peter Holden 1B.
Records are kept of the fastest male and female swims for all distances and strokes for each year age group from 6 years through to 19+. This includes Open Water distances. These are called "AGR"s - Age Group Records. In addition the overall Club Records are kept for each stroke and distance.
The longest standing Club Record is 32.50 seconds for the 50m breast set by Mike Humphries in July 1995. The only other male record remaining from the 1990's is 15.54 seconds for the 25m breast set by Bryan Avery in October 1997. Carrie Horton retains the only female record set in the '90's, 1.08.60 for the 100m fly set in April 1997.
Coincidentally 62% of both the male and female records have been set during or since 2004. This demonstrates the strength, internal rivalry and competitiveness of Chippenham ASC in recent years and reflects well on the coaches as well as the swimmers. Ruth Butler retains most female records (8) setting her first in July, 2000 and her last in March 2003. Tim Dutton, until recently, held the most male records (8) and retains all but 2 of the freestyle records setting his first in April, 2001 and his last in October, 2003.
The setting of a Club Record is a major achievement and of the 7 female swimmers currently holding one or more only 2 swim regularly for Chippenham ASC, Kalynn Branston and Maddie Harris. Of the 9 male holders only 4 are regular representatives; Jack Crow, Ed Tunnicliffe, Oliver Harris and Skye Landon.
Records are there to be broken so if you are a younger swimmer set yourself the target of one day achieving a Club Record!
Male Records: Oliver Harris - 9, Tim Dutton - 8, Ed Tunnicliffe - 4, Bryan Avery - 1, Jack Crow - 1, Mike Humphries - 1, Dave Jacomb - 1, Skye Landon -1, Ben Matthews - 1.
Jack Crow broke a Club Age Group Record (15 year old) with each of his swims, the 200IM, 400IM and the 100 Back. Frustratingly close to both a PB and Club Record in each instance he is clearly capable of breaking all of them in the coming months.
Ollie Harris reached the final of the three races he entered, the 50 and 100 Free, in which he came 4th and 7th respectively, and the 50 Fly, another 4th. He set Club Age Group Records (17 year old) with all bar his final 100 Free swim and broke the Club 50 Fly Record with both his swims, his 50 Fly time in the final being 26.27 secs.
Are you interested? All ages can enter. It is the first time the official Championships will be held in the UK. The only stroke allowed is head up breast stroke and the distance raced is 25m. Around 850 competitors are expected from a variety of countries including Russia, Finland and China.
The South London Swimming Club is hosting the Championships at Tooting Bec Lido. Check out www.slsc.org.uk/ where there is a link to the BT sponsored winter swimming site at www.slsc.org.uk/wwsc2008/index.php Check out the rules for getting out of the pool quickly and wearing footwear!
It will be cold. I will have a go if someone else will!
If you are interested catch me (James Harris), send me a note via Ollie or Maddie or send an email to the CASC website.
Ollie and Maddie Harris both came 11th in their year age group in the 50m free. This placed them both at 75th position in Great Britain in the Open Competition all swimmers from Olympians down.
Ollie faces a stern challenge to maintain his place in the top flight of UK swimmers in his age group. Ranked 3rd in the UK for 50m Fly last year he came 7th in the 50m Free and 15th in the 100m Free at the Nationals. All significant achievements but with a 5 month layoff this year Ollie will still be playing catch-up with the best in the UK. Judging by his come-back at the South West Championships however, we can be confident he will put in 110%.
Having reached 3 National Finals Maddie is used to pressure and high quality opposition. Coming 8th in the UK in the 100m and 200m Free in 2006 she will be swimming in both events this year again along with the 50m Free. Reaching a Final this year will be significantly harder as Maddie will be in a double age group with the year above. The atmosphere and the event will however, bring out the best of her swims.
All at Chippenham wish Ollie and Maddie the best of swims!
On Sunday Chippenham dominated the combined South West and Wiltshire 1.5k Open Water Championships at Weymouth. With the largest squad of any club competing the 12 swimmers all swam open water personal bests. In sunny conditions but in a cold sea made choppy by a force 2 wind, Chippenham won Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Wiltshire competition at both Junior Boys and Senior Men as well as Gold and Silver in the Junior Girls. No club has made such a sweep of Wiltshire open water medals.
5 Chippenham swimmers attended the SW Region Bagcats @ Millfield, it was a successful competition with good PB's being achieved. Miles Stanton had an excellent first championships achieving 3rd overall in the Bagcat competition. Well done Miles.
1/7/07, the Regional sprints took place with 6 swimmers attending. The competition was very well run. Excellent swims & PB'S saw very good results with Miles Stanton achieving 3rd overall in the 10 yr age group, Jack Crow overall 2nd in the 14 yr age group & Branwen Harris achieving 2nd in the 18 yr age group. Ed Tunnicliffe, Kalynn Branston & Evangeline Preece swam well.An excellent achievement by Chippenham Club

Awesome Ollie strikes South West Gold
In an astonishing comeback after a 5 month layoff Oliver Harris led the Chippenham team in a successful South West Championships for the Club.
