With the new season starting again shortly, Crow is looking forward to working hard and achieving National qualification times for a fourth year in succession.

Success at ASA South West Region Relays Sunday 16th May
Chippenham Swimming Club's boys squad won gold and silver at the ASA South West Region Relays on Sunday.
Jack books his Nationals ticket and Chippenham ASC Nationals history
Jack has once again achieved qualifying times for the National Championships in the 100 and 200 Back. This will be his third consecutive Nationals apearance. He may yet qualify in a butterfly distance. Jack reached a 100 Back National semi-final after an excrutiatingly exciting swim-off. Looking stronger than ever Jack is looking to make a further impact upon the Nationals scene in 2010. Held at the start of August the National Youth and BAGCAT Championships are where the elite of British age group swimming compete.
Chippenham has a a significant history of representation at the Nationals. Given the size and resources of the Club the annual appearance of one or more Chippenham swimmers at the top level is a major achievement and reflects the efforts of the swimmers and importantly, Nigel the Coach and the rest of the coaching team. The names of some of the Chippenham Nationals swimmers have faded in the memory but it is useful to remind ourselves of what they achieved as it shows what Chippenham swimmers should be aiming for.
Prior to 2002 Catherine and Ruth Butler and Tim Dutton competed at the Nationals for several years.
2007 Maddie Harris; 50Fr, 100Fr, 200Fr Oliver Harris; 50Fr, 100Fr
2008 Maddie Harris; 50Fr, 100Fr - Semi Finalist Jack Crow; 100Bc, 200Bc Oliver Harris; 50Fr, 100Fr and British Championships (the top level UK senior competition) 50Fr, 50Fl
SEVEN swimmers from the club competed at the South West Regional Championships at Millfield School.
Jack Crow,17, raced well to make the final of the 200m butterfly where he finished fourth.
With only the top eight through to the finals, Crow just missed out in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke were he was ninth, 12th and 10th respectively.
Crow was also 11th in the 50m and 100m butterfly.
Maddie Harris, 17, was 19th and 20th in the 50m and 100m freestyle.
Evie Preece, 15, had a busy weekend competing in four events, the 400m Individual Medley (24th), 200m backstroke (29th) 100m backstroke (29th) and 200m IM (42nd) Katie Smith finished 17th and 10th in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. Rachel Moore, 18, was 27th in the 200m backstroke, Beatrice Moore, 16, 16th in the 100m butterfly and Kalynn Branston, 16, 12th in the 200m butterfly.
Chippenhams squad will now turn its attention to the first Summer League fixture at Corsham on May 8.

Wiltshire Winter League Finals
Chippenham Swimming club finished a fine 5th in the A final of the Wilts Winter League on Saturday night.

Chippenham had 2 race wins with the 12 and under boys, Owen Wilson, James Tucker, George Claverly and Matthew Hare winning the breast stroke relay and the U15 girls Charity Moore, Chelsea Chard, Charlotte Myers and Katie Smith also winning the breast stroke. Our swimmers won 19 medals at the Wilts Youths Championship at Swindons Link Centre.
Charlotte Myers led the way with 50m breasstroke gold, also good enough for 3rd in the Junior Championships.
For the men, top swimmer was Jack Crow with two silvers and four bronze.

Issy Collings and Emma Holloway selected for England Junior Talent Synchro Squad for 2010
Congratulations to Issy and Emma who following their performances at the Synchro British Championships and National Age Group competition in December have been selected for the England Junior Talent Squad for 2010. They are 2 of approximately 20 athletes selected and will attend several training camps through out the year. Well done!
Thanks to everybody for making the event a success, especially the Holden house for being so hospitable! Any small surplus from the day will be put towards the Club's funds.
The results ... 1st Waterfield 2nd Preece/Tunnicliffes/Holdens (I think they were all in the car!) 3rd Baker 4th Burgess 5th Crow
Most participating teams got most of the clues which is a compliment to everybody as though some of the clues were straightforward others were challenging.
There were several extremely accurate representations of ducks and some that clearly came from Picasso's cubist period! Also, the poems - all of which have been kept - appear to span the breadth and plumb the depth of the poetic range. These will be placed on the website in the social section in due course.
In the final set of races in an exciting week Jack broke his own Club 200 back record last Saturday in a converted time of 2.12.20. After his expoits in the 100 back Jack felt he might have gone faster but to beat his own Club record was a significant achievement in its own right and so was satisfied with another outstanding swim.
On the following day Maddie broke Branwen's 4 year old 50 free Club record in a converted time of 27.21. Branwen was cheering Maddie all the way and could see Maddie had to strain every muscle to beat her own time and win the heat.
The 2009 Nationals campaign has been one of the most successful in recent years. 5 Age Group records, 4 Club records and 4 PB's were set in a total of 6 swims.
The swimmers clearly work extremely hard and have been rewarded with a set of fantastic swims in the most challenging competition environment.
As Coach Nigel must be congratulated for yet again bringing the swimmers to the peak of their performance at the time when it counts. It should be recognised this is a significant achievement as many swimmers do not swim PB's at the Nationals. Chippenham is a club with very modest resources compared with those that produce 30+ Nationals swimmers each year. Yet Nigel has now taken swimmers to 4 Nationals finals and 2 semi-finals, real evidence of his coaching skills and those of the coaching team.
Next year? Several swimmers are knocking on the Nationals Qualifying Time door. Let's ensure it is opened in 2010!
Maddie started the Nationals campaign yesterday with a 7am warm-up and the 100 free at c.8.20am. Finishing in her fastest time for the distance this year, 58.95, Maddie beat Branwen's AGR but just missed her own Club record. A good swim that sets her up for the 50 free this weekend.
Later in the morning Jack swam a scorching 100 back heat to beat his own Club record in a time of 1.00.36. An excellent time it soon became clear to the band of eight Chippenham supporters that Jack stood a fair chance of reaching his first Nationals semi-final. Times and swimmers in later heats were ticked off and then, following the end of the 100 back races we waited. After what seemed an age the announcer made two requests for the Chippenham Team Coach to attend the Referee's room. In Pond's Forge this is a high tech affair. Nigel emerged and confirmed what we had suspected ... Jack would have to swim off against a Plymouth Leander swimmer!!!
It should be borne in mind a swim off at the Nationals is a very rare occurrance and is swum in front of many hundreds of swimmers and spectators and depending on when it is swum, in front of over a thousand.
Initially Jack stayed with the supporters but soon moved off with Nigel to the warm-up pool. He appeared calm and focused.
The time came and Jack walked to the blocks. There were scores of Plymouth swimmers and supporters but I'm assured Chippenham made just as much noise before and during the race if not more! As Jack stood by the blocks it was thought that his mum, Tracey, would potentially have a greater need for medical assistance after race than the swimmer himself!
What a swim! An excellent start (everybody was so excited nobody remembered to record his reaction time that appears on the giant display!). Coming up fractionally ahead Jack took the race by the scruff of the neck and swam powerfully and in a clearly controlled manner to build a clear lead of about half a metre at halfway. The second length saw Jack increase his lead and with 25m's to go looked safe ... but he maintained the pressure to make sure. A stunning time of 59.22 resulted! (All times in this report are converted to 25m times.) The first Chippenham swimmer to break the minute barrier!
Jack showed considerable strength of mind and physical depth to win through.
To reach a semi-final is fantastic achievement and places Jack firmly on the UK map. In the semi-final Jack's swim was slower than his previous swims but earned him an overall 19th place in the 15/16 age group (there are 10 lanes). At the time of writing his 16 year old position has not been identified.
Nigel has now experienced most challenges at the Nationals, this was a first! Jack's achievement reflects Nigel's ability to ensure Chippenham swimmers perform at their best at the Nationals, a feat many Clubs do not achieve.
John, along with Kalynn Branston, Chelsea Chard and Katie Smith recently competed in the South West Sprint Championships. All swam well with John in outstanding form.
In gaining an overall age group silver John smashed the Club's age group records at 50m Back and 100m IM. Both records were particularly hard to break being of long standing and both having been previously held by Nationals swimmers.
The medal and records are a fair reward for John who has shown consistent and significant improvement over the last 6 months and more. Well done John!
Outstanding performance by Chippenham swimmers in the 3k open water event. 3 swimmers entered the event on the evening of the 1st July, medals were won by all three.
Congratulations to:
Evangeline Preece 1st in Age Group 12-14 2nd Junior Championship 2nd Senior Championship
Jack Crow 1st in Age Group 15-16 3rd Senior Championship
Most swims were close to PB's and Nigel was pleased with the overall consistency of performance.
Six finals were reached:
Jack - 50bc, 100bc, 200bc, 50fl, 200fl Maddie - 50fr
The highlight of the weekend was Jack achieving NQT's in 100bc and 200bc with well-timed swims full of focus and determination. Well done Jack! Clearly in oustanding form Jack was the only swimmer to break any Chippenham records:
100bc - AGR and Club 200bc - AGR and Club 50fl - AGR 100fl - AGR 200fl - AGR and Club

This year the Wiltshire Cotswold Water Park 1500m race will be held on the 16th June (with a "warm-up" race possibly being held on an earlier day) with the SW Open Water Championships being held again at Preston Beach, Weymouth on the 5th and 6th of June. It is being confirmed which of these events will constitute the Wiltshire Open Water Championships - for the last 2 years the Weymouth event has been used.
Summary details of the SW Championships are noted below, further details regarding the Cotswold Water Park event have yet to be issued.
Last year Chippenham ASC dominated the County scene, winning the Senior and Junior boys events for the second successive year and also winning the Junior girls championship. These successes were supported by numerous silver and bronze medals.
Please let me know if you are interested in any of the races by the end of April - by email, note via Ollie/Maddie or tell me.

An excellent primer for the Wiltshire BAGCATS and Youth Championships.
At last night's Winter League 2 Gala George was the only Chippenham swimmer to set an Age Group Record. George swam 18.6 seconds in the 25m backstroke in the Boys 13 year old category. Being only 10 years of age at the moment he broke Nathaniel Auckland's 1999 10 year old Age Group Record.
Well done George, many more records out there to be broken!
A grand haul of 47 medals was brought back by the Chippenham team from the Corsham Open last weekend. Three swimmers achieved best overall swimmer in their age group - Olivia Stanton, Katie Smith and Maddie Harris.
The roll of honour: Maddie Harris 6G, Olivia Stanton 5G 3S, John Branston 4G 1S, Faye Lardner 2G 1S 1B, Katie Smith 2G 1S 1B, Emily Daulby 1G 1B, Rachel Moore 5S 2B, Daniel Branston 1S 2B, Peter Holden 1S 1B, Beatrice Moore 1B, Chelsea Chard 1B, Peter Holden 1B.
Records are kept of the fastest male and female swims for all distances and strokes for each year age group from 6 years through to 19+. This includes Open Water distances. These are called "AGR"s - Age Group Records. In addition the overall Club Records are kept for each stroke and distance.
The longest standing Club Record is 32.50 seconds for the 50m breast set by Mike Humphries in July 1995. The only other male record remaining from the 1990's is 15.54 seconds for the 25m breast set by Bryan Avery in October 1997. Carrie Horton retains the only female record set in the '90's, 1.08.60 for the 100m fly set in April 1997.
Coincidentally 62% of both the male and female records have been set during or since 2004. This demonstrates the strength, internal rivalry and competitiveness of Chippenham ASC in recent years and reflects well on the coaches as well as the swimmers. Ruth Butler retains most female records (8) setting her first in July, 2000 and her last in March 2003. Tim Dutton, until recently, held the most male records (8) and retains all but 2 of the freestyle records setting his first in April, 2001 and his last in October, 2003.
The setting of a Club Record is a major achievement and of the 7 female swimmers currently holding one or more only 2 swim regularly for Chippenham ASC, Kalynn Branston and Maddie Harris. Of the 9 male holders only 4 are regular representatives; Jack Crow, Ed Tunnicliffe, Oliver Harris and Skye Landon.
Records are there to be broken so if you are a younger swimmer set yourself the target of one day achieving a Club Record!
Male Records: Oliver Harris - 9, Tim Dutton - 8, Ed Tunnicliffe - 4, Bryan Avery - 1, Jack Crow - 1, Mike Humphries - 1, Dave Jacomb - 1, Skye Landon -1, Ben Matthews - 1.
Jack Crow broke a Club Age Group Record (15 year old) with each of his swims, the 200IM, 400IM and the 100 Back. Frustratingly close to both a PB and Club Record in each instance he is clearly capable of breaking all of them in the coming months.
Ollie Harris reached the final of the three races he entered, the 50 and 100 Free, in which he came 4th and 7th respectively, and the 50 Fly, another 4th. He set Club Age Group Records (17 year old) with all bar his final 100 Free swim and broke the Club 50 Fly Record with both his swims, his 50 Fly time in the final being 26.27 secs.
Are you interested? All ages can enter. It is the first time the official Championships will be held in the UK. The only stroke allowed is head up breast stroke and the distance raced is 25m. Around 850 competitors are expected from a variety of countries including Russia, Finland and China.
The South London Swimming Club is hosting the Championships at Tooting Bec Lido. Check out www.slsc.org.uk/ where there is a link to the BT sponsored winter swimming site at www.slsc.org.uk/wwsc2008/index.php Check out the rules for getting out of the pool quickly and wearing footwear!
It will be cold. I will have a go if someone else will!
If you are interested catch me (James Harris), send me a note via Ollie or Maddie or send an email to the CASC website.
Ollie and Maddie Harris both came 11th in their year age group in the 50m free. This placed them both at 75th position in Great Britain in the Open Competition all swimmers from Olympians down.
Ollie faces a stern challenge to maintain his place in the top flight of UK swimmers in his age group. Ranked 3rd in the UK for 50m Fly last year he came 7th in the 50m Free and 15th in the 100m Free at the Nationals. All significant achievements but with a 5 month layoff this year Ollie will still be playing catch-up with the best in the UK. Judging by his come-back at the South West Championships however, we can be confident he will put in 110%.
Having reached 3 National Finals Maddie is used to pressure and high quality opposition. Coming 8th in the UK in the 100m and 200m Free in 2006 she will be swimming in both events this year again along with the 50m Free. Reaching a Final this year will be significantly harder as Maddie will be in a double age group with the year above. The atmosphere and the event will however, bring out the best of her swims.
All at Chippenham wish Ollie and Maddie the best of swims!
On Sunday Chippenham dominated the combined South West and Wiltshire 1.5k Open Water Championships at Weymouth. With the largest squad of any club competing the 12 swimmers all swam open water personal bests. In sunny conditions but in a cold sea made choppy by a force 2 wind, Chippenham won Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Wiltshire competition at both Junior Boys and Senior Men as well as Gold and Silver in the Junior Girls. No club has made such a sweep of Wiltshire open water medals.
