CHIPPENHAM ASC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

We work in line with Swim England policy that British Age Group swimmers should aim to compete across the widest range of events, particularly over the longer distances, rather than specializing in just one too soon in their careers. It is critically important that members & their parents understand that they should place greater value on the skills & aerobic fitness to swim over middle distances from the age of 9 or 10 years, rather than just doing one length mad dashes! True high-quality sprinting comes when you are older & stronger at youth & adult stages – before then it is really just a bit of fun!! The main block of the Club Championships is designed to achieve all of this, and to be “licensed” under Swim England criteria to give access to County Qualifying times.

Firstly, Excellent Trophies and gold/silver/bronze medals separately for girls & boys in each age group are awarded in each event.

Secondly, as part of the Club Championships we also run the Club Points & Proficiency competition, which is to find the best all round swimmers in each age group [here the age groups are: 9, 10, 11 12 13, 14, 15/16, 17/24 and 25+]. This works on points gained in each heat declared winner race of 50m and above throughout the championships. We use Swim England’s standard “FINA points”. The aim is to encourage swimmers to spread their skill over a wide range of categories rather than specialising in just one too early. For more information see Link

Thirdly, we also award Swim England Competitive Performance Awards in all of the events. Most people will be familiar with badges & certificates from the Swim England Awards Scheme.  The highest level of this Scheme is the series of Competitive Swimming Performance awards.  These can be gained in organised competitions, and we are using them as a motivational device during our Club Championships aimed primarily at our Age Group swimmers.  There are nationally laid down qualifying times for ascending sequences of BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD & PLATINUM awards.  There are different times for each stroke and category.  There are 3 categories altogether:

  • Long Distance
  • Middle Distance
  • Sprints

We work in line with Swim England policy that British age group swimmers should aim to compete across the widest range of events - particularly over the longer distances.  This award scheme is designed to motivate just that. Please help us by encouraging your children to try and achieve as many of these badges as they can!  The relevant qualifying times can be found here Link

Although not formally part of the Club Championships, we also run 25m Time-Trials in the early Autumn to allow everyone to be considered for the upcoming Winter League galas.

Entries:

Depending upon your normal Training Squad [as of 31 July 2024] & your Age Group, for all events marked so:

  •  AUTOMATIC ENTRY - entry is automatic because we expect members to swim all these events, & therefore the entry fees are also automatically added to your Membership subscription; so, for example, all members of the Performance Squad will participate in all events of 50m & above, because we will have worked hard to train them to be capable of that at least at Club level
  •  OPTIONAL ENTRY  - entry is NOT automatic, and members are encouraged to enter any of these where they feel they will have the competence [see below about diving]; entry fees are again covered by your Membership subscription, for ease of administration all members are entered into their optional events so please inform the Competition Team if you DO NOT wish to swim the optional races; note
    • you can choose which of the strokes [butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, IM] you want to participate in – you do not necessarily have to do all of them!
    • DIVING – for those, in Fundamental squad & even Bronze group, who may not wish to start with a dive, there is absolutely no problem if you wish to start in the water or not use the starting block; the coaches will help, and we would much rather that you joined in these important moments in the Club year.

Membership must have been held for at least 90 continuous calendar days prior to the first day of the Championships to gain entitlement to trophies or medals. Newly joining members are otherwise treated exactly the same for “time trials”, because it is important that we can see how they fare in the rankings. If a newly joining member wishes to compete in any other events the fees below will apply.  Please contact Competition Team if you wish to enter.

Fees:

These are already added to your Membership subscription, and depend on which Training Squad you are entering from:

  • Fundamental Skills - £5.00 per swimmer
  • Higher Skills & Performance & Masters - £20.00 per swimmer

Results:

Times achieved & positions will be posted on the Club website Results - Club Championships shortly after each event, and, for those events eligible under the License, times will also appear on the Swim England national rankings.

Points & Proficiency positions will also be updated on Club website Results - Club Championships  after each event.

Badge slips for Competitive Performance Awards will be sent direct to members by Head Coach after each event when a new award has been gained.

Our impressive array of longstanding perpetual trophies & personal medals are awarded to winning members at the formal Club Presentation evening, which is held following completion of the Club Championships.
